This tell all documentary digs deep into the life of the infamous Mark Brandon “Chopper” Read. Be enthralled by Chopper’s personal commentary on the fascinating events of his own life, hear his opinions, thoughts and interaction with the Australian underworld. Gain a “real-life” perspective on this underworld, it’s characters and events, many of which have been portrayed in Channel 9’s gritty TV Series “Underbelly”. In this once in a lifetime perspective, Chopper talks about some of the characters and events that formed the dark canvas of the Australian underworld portrayed in “Underbelly”. FAT BELLY… Beware of imitations.

My Say

I was given this video by my son (love him, he knows I love this stuff!) and in true chopper style, he is cashing in on a good thing, by associating himself with Underbelly and riding its coat-tails for the free publicity…(Or is it the other way around?)

Any Chopper fan (remember the movie, when he was portrayed by a not so famous yet Eric Bana) will love this. Plenty of laughs, chats about the series Underbelly, Reminisces about the old days etc. There is a funny bit where he rocks up to the old Pentridge Prison, presses the buzzer and says ” Gidday mate, its chopper read here, any chance you can let me in and have a walk around? (and they agree) The funny thing is he spent years and years in the hole back in the day trying to get OUT of the joint.

The other funny thing is some say we look alike??? Anyway here is the promo

  1. Cheers Robbo, Thanks for posting this film of the now late passed on Mark Brandon ”Chopper” Read. I know many people loved or hated Dr Chop Chop, but no one that ever mattered was his victim, like the jam tin child sex offender he spoke of. He only preyed on the bad, in the bad world of the bad people. And as he said, many of the would be gangsters today, like Drug king pin Carl Williams and his gun for hire sidekick Benji, would have been quickly put down in the seventies world of H.M. Pentridge . H.Division and the other Divisions and remand yards of D.Division, there was no protection in the Chopper Read, Overcoat and Painters and Dockers days of Bluestone College.
Personally as I knew Mark when he was locked up in the hard grim old notorious H.Division of Pentridge as a Prison screw, and it did sadden me very much with a tear, to see him talking about his sons, in the cemetery , now he has passed on. Chopper used to s in his crim days, no tears for a tough guy.
I could not but help, remember Mark as the tough H.Division Prisoner Billet, always having a yarn with the screws, that treated him with respect, regardless of his violent past background. There is a photo of Chopper in his first book, on the inside, where he is posing as a joke as Klu klux Klansmen, with two respected H.division Prison Officers that I knew in H.Division in 1989. And one of them had a younger brother, who went on to become the Governor of H.M.Barwon Prison, and later mysteriously disappeared, off duty in the Victorian high Mountain Country under suspicious foul play. I still remember Chopper and these officers when I was only starting out in Pentridge H.Division. And they were good firm but fair blokes, and Chopper was a real joker down in the slot. Which was full of some very dangerous men, who had committed some very horrible crimes. And there were many violent scary dark days of violence committed between prisoners down in H, back then.
Any way seeing Chopper in the cemetery, made me think that he was a living criminal legend, and looked like what Ned Kelly did , minus his famous armour more than a 130 years before in his pose against the Old Melbourne Gaol, bluestone wall, just before he was to be hung in 1880. In what was poor Ned Kellys last stand. This was Mark Chopper Reads last stand.
    REST IN PEACE ……………………………………………………MARK.
