Paul McLeay NSW frontbencher caught perving on porn at parlimant

MP who accessed adult sites ‘humiliated’

A New South Wales Government frontbencher forced to resign over accessing gambling and adult websites on his office computer says he did not do anything illegal, but admits it was inappropriate behaviour for a minister.

An emotional Paul McLeay says he went to Premier Kristina Keneally after information about his computer usage became public.

Former ports minister Paul McLeay has apologised to his family, the public and his colleagues after he was forced to resign for accessing gambling and adult websites on his parliamentary computer.

During question time in parliament on Wednesday, NSW Premier Kristina Keneally said Mr McLeay had earlier in the day admitted using a parliamentary computer to access the websites.

Saying she couldn’t condone the behaviour, she said she had asked for his resignation as Minister for Ports and Waterways, Mineral and Forest Resources and the Illawarra.

In a brief statement, Mr McLeay apologised for the web scandal.

‘I would like to apologise to the premier, my parliamentary colleagues, my electorate and the people of NSW,’ Mr McLeay said.

‘I apologise to my wife and family.

‘I understand that as a minister I accept that I am held to a higher standard and that’s why I have offered the premier my resignation.’

Ms Keneally said using a parliamentary computer to access gambling and adult sites was unacceptable behaviour for one of her ministers.

‘I made clear to the member that I expect ministers to use the resources of office appropriately and that this behaviour is not the standard I expect of a minister,’ she said.

‘I am sorry for this situation to have occurred. I will not condone it, and I will continue to make clear that I expect the highest integrity from minister.’

The latest scandal to beset the NSW government comes just a week after Ms Keneally lashed out at Labor MPs for repeated bad behaviour.

Responding to a bad Newspoll result for her government, Ms Keneally said she was ‘frustrated’ by the repeated scandals she’s had to deal with.

Giving a frank assessment of her government’s performance, Ms Keneally said ill-discipline was ‘destroying people’s confidence and trust’ in state Labor.

Opposition leader Barry O’Farrell said Mr McLeay’s resignation was the latest instalment in the ‘Labor soap opera’.

‘Only days ago Kristina Keneally demanded of her MPs’ better behaviour, more discipline, and within days we’ve seen a resignation under the most extraordinary of circumstances,’ he said.

‘Kristina Keneally has been sidelined here again by her colleagues, who have ignored her calls for unity, her calls for better behaviour, her calls for discipline.’

  1. How funny is this. Perving on a bit of porn get you sacked (well forced resignation) from the NSW Government. Yet the ministers who rort every tax payer dollar out of every little scam over 20 or more years on the bank benches, without even asking a question in Parliament sit there and count there money… Is this the worst and young bloke could do in a bit of downtime? Bloody hell half the Australian workforce would get the ass for looking at porn or having a bet at work
