Day 1

Allison’s family have thanked the media for compassion during the “most devastating period” of their lives and have asked for privacy in a statement issued this morning.

To the Australian media,

As a family we would like to thank the Australian media for the respect you have shown us over the past two years during what has been the most devastating period of our lives.

Throughout this time, you have shown us empathy and compassion for which we are enormously grateful. We have also appreciated your efforts to ensure our family and in particular, our grandchildren’s privacy have been protected.

As the trial is imminent, we understand public interest in the case will again escalate and we recognise the media has a role in responding to this.

However, out of respect for our daughter, her children and the legal process we will not be doing any interviews in the lead up to or during the trial. We ask that you respect our privacy and our decision not to grant interviews and refrain from photographing or filming the children.

We hope you can imagine the ongoing impact of these events on our granddaughters – it has been devastating and will be long lasting.

Our primary concern remains their emotional and physical well being. We are trying to help them rebuild their lives and ask for your support and cooperation in this.

Yours sincerely,

The Dickie Family

GERARD Baden-Clay has pleaded not guilty to murdering his wife Allison

Appearing in court for the first day of what is expected to be a four-week trial, Baden-Clay answered “not guilty your honour” in a firm and loud voice when the charge was read against him.

Parents of Gerard Baden-Clay, Nigel and Elaine, along with their lawyer Peter Shields (left) arrive at court.

The jury is now being empanelled.

Earlier, Baden-Clay took his seat in court with his parents Nigel and Elaine seated behind him, in the front row of the public gallery.

Hi all, sorry for the teething problems, I have had to make this “page” into a thread, to enable more options and enable tags etc so we can find particular moments in the trial easier as the trail moves along. I will move all current comments on this page to the thread.

So please go here http://aussiecriminals.com.au/2014/06/10/gerard-baden-clay-trial-day-1/ for all comments about todays proceedings.

  1. Family would be fragile with most of it being a blur at days end.I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone-I had a family member on trial (not guilty) I aged 20 years..and still get nervous thinking about it.

  3. Hey folks I made a few changes to the 1st day of trial thread (http://aussiecriminals.com.au/gerard-baden-clay-trial/day-1/) so I get it right for the whole trial. I will start with the beginning of the day and time-stamp each update throughout the day underneath, so we can all read what happened from start to finish (and anywhere in between with the times highlighted)

Also for ease of reading and smoothness, any photo, video or audio evidence released will be posted at bottom of each days thread!

I hope you hang around and follow what should be an interesting trial

  4. Disgusting a jury is allowed to carry on so long with a persons life at stake. Trial by jury should be stopped. These must be a bunch of uneducated idiots not to be able to make their own decisions and not be swayed. I think it is about time the Judge dismissed the Jury and released this offender. In murder cases and serious crimes Judges should be making decisions not any person who can be employed or not and have very little sense.
